Hello Folks, We had a flurry of weather events over the weekend including a brief flurry of snow. On Friday night we had our first frost of the season followed by our first hard freeze on Saturday and again on Sunday night. We had 26 degrees at 6 AM Sunday morning and 24 degrees this morning – brrrrr! Last week in preparation, we were scurrying about trying to harvest anything that would be damaged and covering a few crops we thought maybe we could save. (more…)
Hello Everyone, I hope you all had a pleasant Memorial Day Weekend. This second pre-season update is a little late going out because we have been working long days in the field trying to get caught up on the planting schedule after a late start. I can report that we are just about back on track and even a little bit ahead on some of the warm weather crops. We have been getting a fair amount of rain so crops are growing well. (more…)
Hi All! As expected we were hit quite hard with a freeze last week, three nights in a row with temperatures dipping into the mid 20’s. We harvested a lot of peppers ahead of the cold blast; some green, some ripe, and some in between. They represent the last taste of the summer crops for this season and will be in the shares this week and next (if they hold up well). (more…)
Hello Folks, things continue to well here on the farm – crops are abundant and quality is good. We dodged a bullet with last week’s storms, receiving only about an inch of rain and no high winds or hail. Only about a mile north of us they got an inch of rain in 20 minutes on Monday afternoon, but that cell fortunately missed our farm. It was unusual but not unwelcome to have such mild temperatures for mid-July. (more…)
Easy to grow and store, high-yielding, supernutritious and crunchy like an apple, yacon root (pronounced ya-kon) is one of the many “new” vegetables coming to us from South America. In reality, this fruitlike vegetable has been cultivated throughout the Andes for more than a millennium. South Americans eat it as a fruit; they also use the huge leaves to wrap foods during cooking, in the same way cabbage leaves are used in Germany, grape leaves in the Mideast and banana leaves in the tropics. Only recently – thanks to some adventurous green thumbs – have North Americans begun to see yacon in produce markets. (more…)
Hi Folks, As we head into the final weeks of the season winter weather is already rearing it’s ugly head. In last week’s episode I mentioned feeling frustration; my mood at present can best be described as mildly depressed. Most of you have just recently had your first frost, but out here we are a bit farther north and at a slightly higher elevation. I’ve lost track of how many frosts and hard freezes we’ve had so far. It doesn’t really matter much anymore since the tender crops are done and what is left in the field is fairly hardy. (more…)
Although considered a winter squash, acorn squash actually belongs to the same species as all “summer” squashes (such as zucchini and yellow squash). The most common variety is dark green in color, but newer varieties can be yellow, white, even variegated. As the name suggests, its shape resembles that of an acorn. It is a good candidate for winter storage, keeping several months in a cool dry location. Squash can be refrigerated, but it will deteriorate quickly and should only be refrigerated 1-2 weeks. We will be offering one additional share to be delivered during the week of November 23rd (Thanksgiving week). This will be a “stock up” share and will include various vegetables that store well, so that you will be able to enjoy produce from the farm well into the winter months, as well as provide veggies for your Thanksgiving table. The total weight of this share will be between 50 and 60 lbs. Approximately a third of the share will be an assortment of butternut, acorn, buttercup (kabocha), delicata, and sweet dumpling squash. The share will also include an assortment of root vegetables such as carrots, beets, parsnips, turnips, celery root, and radishes. I expect that the root crops will comprise about 12 lbs. of the share. (more…)
Calorie for calorie, leafy green vegetables like spinach provide more nutrients than any other food. Spinach is thought to have originated in ancient Persia. Spinach made its way to China in the 7th century when the king of Nepal sent it as a gift to this country. Spinach has a much more recent history in Europe than many other vegetables. It was only brought to that continent in the 11th century, when the Moors introduced it into Spain. In fact, for a while, spinach was known as “the Spanish vegetable” in England. (more…)
