Hello Everyone! So here we go — we have arrived at the first week of CSA deliveries. As previously mentioned we got off to a very late start with our planting this year thanks to another interminable winter. The first delivery will be a bit smaller than in previous seasons. We have some potatoes held over in cold storage from last season which we will be shipping this week and next as supplies last. (more…)
Hi Everyone! It was a beautiful day today; after the frigid weekend it felt like summer was back! Too bad it won’t last. Another arctic blast will be blowing in tomorrow and is predicted to break lots of low temperature records. Here on the farm we are expecting lows in the mid-teens two nights in a row (brrrrr). Hello Everyone! We continue to experience dry conditions here on the farm. This past week we received a scant 0.2 inches of rain. We were hoping for a bit more overnight Saturday but it never arrived. I was anxiously watching the radar as bands of rain moved across Pennsylvania, but the storms either dropped all their moisture to the west of us or passed to the north. Our next chance for precipitation is on Thursday – fingers crossed. Meanwhile, we continue to move the sprinklers around the field to get the most important crops the water that they need. (more…)
Hi Folks,
We’ve had two wonderful rains here on the farm during the past week; each dropping a little over an inch of precipitation. The first was a beautiful slow steady rain that fell over a period of 8 hours or so, which allowed the very parched ground to soak it up. The second came as more of a deluge, delivering an inch in about two hours, but since the ground was already moist it was ready to absorb the water with little or no runoff. (more…)
Hello Everyone,
We continue to experience dry conditions here at the farm, with last week’s rain dropping only a miserly quarter of an inch. This along with very cold weather has greatly slowed the growth of the crops that remain in the field. We are expecting to be hammered with 2 or 3 nights of temperatures near or below 20 degrees this week. (more…)
Hello Folks,
The fields had dried out nicely during the past week and we were able to get back to preparing the ground for planting and to get caught up on transplanting of the fall Cole crops. Because we have a fairly sandy soil here at the farm it drains well and dries out rapidly; a blessing during rainy times and a bit of a challenge during drought. The newly transplanted Brussels sprouts and cauliflower were looking quite sad during the hot spell last week and I was hoping for a little rain to perk them up. (more…)
Hello Folks! We received about an inch of rain this week from a day of drizzle on Thursday and a couple of hours of heavier rain on Sunday. This should help the crops remaining in the field to size up. We also had a couple of cold nights; what we refer to as a hard freeze as compared to a light frost. We have been continuing to cover the peppers but they sustain a little more damage each time and we have to pick much of the fruit green beforehand. We will have peppers again this week but unfortunately not many of the beautiful red and yellow ripe fruit we have had. (more…)
Curly endive, also known as frisée, is a leafy vegetable in the chicory family. (Other chicory types include bitter veggies like escarole, radicchio, and the white-leaved Belgian endive). Curly endive is a crisp bitter green can be used as an addition in salads, or can be cooked as a side dish. The inner pale leaves are somewhat more tender and mild than the bitter outer ones.

We seem to have dodged a bullet this weekend as the heavy rains predicted did not materialize. We received only about a half an inch of precipitation as opposed to the 3-5 inches forecast as possible. We’re not completely out of the woods yet, as there are still a few days of scattered storms and showers ahead. (more…)
Hi Folks! So, on the weather front we have good news and bad news. We received 0.8 of an inch of rain which has alleviated the dry state we were in. Overnight on Friday we had our first frost of the season. This is about 10 days earlier than the average first frost for our area and was most unwelcome. It was a fairly light frost and we were expecting it, so we did what we could to protect some of the more tender crops. We covered some of the peppers, beans, and the summer squash and I got up in the wee hours to turn on the sprinklers to protect a few other crops. (more…)
