Hi Folks,
Well I can report that we received an inch of much needed precipitation last Thursday, but at quite a cost. The rain came in a torrential downpour mostly during a 15 minute period accompanied by fierce winds that toppled trees all over our area. We lost power for about 30 hours until midnight on Friday. I was returning from PA where I was picking up fertilizer and as I neared the farm I began to encounter branches in the roadway and the trees blocking one lane of the road. When I was 5 minutes from the farm I was stopped by a tree blocking the entire road. I finally arrived home about an hour later after repeated detours were also found to be impassable. (more…)

Hi Folks,

It’s been getting rather dry again here on the farm — nearly 2 weeks without a substantial rainfall — and while there is still some moisture deeper in the ground, the surface is essentially dust. This makes it a bit challenging to get good germination on the many crops that we are currently seeding, such as carrots, turnips, and mustard greens. (more…)

Hi Folks, Another week and another 6” of rain!  All I can say is if I wanted to live somewhere it rained all the time I would have moved to Seattle!  Hopefully we are coming to the end of this wacky weather pattern and the jet stream will move back up into Canada where it belongs.  The tomatoes are starting to show signs of decline but we will fight the blight and try to keep them alive.  We are set back on our planting and for a few crops it’s too late for this season (like that last planting of sweet corn I had planned).  We do have lots of corn planted and the first of it began to mature late last week – the sweet treat I alluded to in my last update.  We hope to have enough for everyone this week, but if you don’t receive any you will for sure next week. Hi Folks, so it was another scorching week, and no rain fell.  We just received about a quarter of an inch of the wet stuff along with gale force winds at the time of this writing, with more possible this evening.  There are multiple chances for rain from thunderstorms later in the week into next week, so fingers crossed… (more…)

Hello Everyone!  So, a couple of weeks ago I was at a training with a bunch of my fellow farmers.  Some of them were discussing the wet season we are having and one said “yeah, but farmers never complain,” and everyone laughed.  It’s true though, we only complain when it rains too much or when it doesn’t rain enough; when it’s too hot or too cold!  I’m sure that some of you are tired of my griping about the rain, but who else will listen, if not my members who are impacted by the weather in terms of what they receive in their shares? Hello Folks, Welcome to the 2015 Circle Brook Farm CSA season! As you may have noticed it was another long hard winter!  We have been busy in the greenhouse since the ides of March, but were not able to start working the ground until Mid-April.  April 23 was the first day of work for many of my field crew and it was an overcast, blustery one with intermittent snow flurries all day. I’m sure they were wishing they could have remained in their tropical clime a bit longer. Since then the weather has gotten nice; unfortunately “nice” for most people is not always the best for farming. (more…)

Hello Everyone, I apologize for being so late with the first update of the season.  We have been working hard to get the planting done after a bit of a late start. In late February it seemed we would have an early spring but the winter came back with a vengeance. The big blizzard brought us nearly 2 feet of snow and then several weeks of rainy weather left the fields too wet to plow until early April.  Since then the weather has been acceptable; a bit cool through April but with adequate rainfall.
