Gazpacho

Easy Gazpacho

This is my go-to recipe for delicious and satisfying gazpacho. And now that we are in peak tomato season, it’s an easy meal, despite what might appear like a long and arduous process — it is not! Read it thru a few times, make it once, and you will see how simple it is. The recipe serves 4-6 and hails from the website www.thekitchn.com. Do try it, please. (more…)

Stuffed delicata squash

White Bean and Kale Stuffed Delicata Squash

From the website, www.cooklocal.com, this easy recipe serves 4 (or 2 if you are really hungry!).  You can readily add some pancetta or bulk sausage to the stuffing for a non-vegetarian meal.  Cook the meat for at least 10 minutes at the start of the recipe, then proceed with garlic, beans, kale, etc., as noted.  Just as yummy! Hello Everyone, Happy Labor Day! I hope you have all enjoyed your long weekend and have put your veggies to good use for your parties and barbeques. Of course here on the farm it’s just another day and we labor away. We don’t get long weekends or even weekends – the crops won’t wait! I’m just saying — not complaining — we get our time off in the winter! I will complain (as I am wont to do) about the weather: dry, dry, dry. The rain predicted for last week evaporated before it got here. There is more predicted for this Thursday (100% probability at present). Hopefully the weatherman has got it right this time; it does happen occasionally. (more…)

Farm News – June 15, 2020

Hello everyone, pass the peas, please!  As you may already know from my recent request for volunteers, the pea season has begun.  Having been raised on canned vegetables, the first time I tasted fresh peas was a revelation.  Who knew how sweet and delicious they were; bearing no resemblance to the gray balls of mush to which I was accustomed.  Much like tomatoes, the season for these delicacies is far too short.  They do not tolerate hot weather, and since spring only seems to last a few weeks anymore, they will be with us for 3 or 4 weeks.  We have English or shell peas, snow and sugar snap, which both have edible pods.  This week we will have mostly shell peas and as availability permits, we will rotate through the various varieties so that everyone will receive some of each type. Farm News- August 16, 2012

Hello Everyone,

We have enjoyed moderate temperatures and reasonable quantities of precipitation this past week. No weather related problems or catastrophes to report this update! We have been able to transplant out thousands of fall vegetables. I have been busy sowing many of the direct seeds vegetables from root crops- carrots, turnips and beets to greens-arugula, spinach, and broccoli raab as well as more herbs-dill and cilantro. (more…)

Hi Folks, A few words about the stock up share.  We ended up not having very much winter squash; it did not keep well for us this year. There is only acorn and some small buttercup. I recommend cooking the buttercup soon and freezing what you don’t need. The acorn should keep for a while but it does get stringy after many weeks in storage.

We have tried to make up for this with other items – notably sweet potatoes, which were not promised and have not been in the shares in years past.  We put them in plastic bags because they poke holes in paper ones, but they should be removed immediately and stored in paper bags or in a bowl on the counter.  It is better to keep these warm.   (more…)

Farm News – October 30, 2014

Hi Everyone, We had a nice group of folks out here on the farm last Saturday for a tour and a campfire. It’s always a pleasure to meet the members and especially the children that are being raised on our veggies. Thanks to those who came out on Sunday and helped break apart garlic bulbs to prepare them for planting. These were the last two farm events for the season. Next year I plan to host more events and provide more frequent opportunities for members to see the farm and learn how their food is grown. (more…)

Farm News August 21, 2008

Hi Folks,

The mild summer weather continues, leaving me with little to complain about on that front! We could use some rain though, as the scattered thunderstorms we experienced this past week came and went quickly and served only to interrupt our field work. Much of the crew’s time this week was again spent on bean picking. (more…)

Farm News- July 10, 2008

Hi Folks,

It was another hectic week at the farm, but a lot was accomplished. One of the major projects that has been worrying me for the last several weeks was the laying of a waterline 500 ft. across horse paddocks, to get water to the crops planted in my newly rented field. There are eggplant, peppers, ground cherries, melons, and other crops planted in this field in plastic mulch covered beds. (more…)
