Orach, also called mountain spinach and bearing some similarity to spinach, is an interesting heirloom vegetable that you probably won’t find in many grocery stores. The velvety leaves are burgundy on one side and deep green on the other, with bright magenta stems, making it pretty enough to be a houseplant. Mr. Lepard explains that the sweet potatoes maintain the brownie’s sweetness and texture while allowing for a little less butter and sugar. He also says that you can further eliminate some sugar and fat by using less chocolate and adding in dried blueberries or sour cherries. If your kids are not veggie fans, this may convert them! Hi Folks, Well here we go! The first week of deliveries has arrived. As previously mentioned we got a late start on planting due to the long winter, so the first couple of weeks won’t be as bountiful as in previous years. I expect that we will make up for this as we go through the season. (more…)
Butternut squash is a winter squash belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family of field pumpkins. It has a sweet, nutty taste similar to that of a pumpkin. It has tan-yellow skin and orange fleshy pulp with a compartment of seeds in the bottom. When ripe, it turns increasingly deep orange, and becomes sweeter and richer. (more…)
The website, www.prairielandcsa.org, had links to a few recipes using purslane, which has a rather limited culinary following. This one, taken from The Wild Vegan Cookbook , sounded reasonable (and easy) enough, if you wanted to introduce your family or Labor Day guests to a new green with little downside risk.
