Farm News – October 14, 2024
Hello All! Every week we wonder what the weather will bring, will it rain, or will it shine, will we freeze or will we bake. This morning when I woke, I checked the weather on my phone, it said rain ending at 9:30. I looked out the window and it was dry as a bone, it seemed the rain ended before it began.
Last week we had our first frost, it came without much warning. We covered what we could, but some crops like beans and corn were damaged. This week we have four nights in a row when the temperatures will drop below freezing. We have been picking as many of the peppers as we can to store and distribute over the next two weeks. The leaves of the corn have turned brown, but the stalk is still green, and the ears are undamaged. The string beans are done but we have salvaged the flageolet beans – a shell bean that is popular in French dishes and can be used in soups.
We are attempting to finish the rotation with cauliflower and Napa cabbage, but now we are adding kohlrabi to the mix, since we may not have enough cauliflower for all those who are owed it. There is still plenty of cauliflower and more broccoli to mature and none of these crops are affected by the frosts.
The share will be: purple potatoes, mixed onions, lettuce, sweet corn, Swiss chard, green peppers, beets, daikon, cauliflower or kohlrabi or Napa cabbage, flageolet beans, delicata squash and choice of an herb. Premium shares will also include shishito peppers and edamame soybeans.
No fruit this week, as we wait for new apple varieties to ripen.
Enjoy! Farmer John
