Farm News – May 31, 2024
Hi Folks, Happy Spring!
Almost summer, I guess, but for now we have not had any of the blistering heat which that season is sure to bring. Things are going very well on the farm – the weather has been relatively cooperative thus far and all my workers have arrived on time. For the last several seasons poor weather has set us back with spring planting and we have needed to postpone the first delivery a couple of times. Because Thanksgiving is so late this year, we were able to plan the start of the season for the second week of June. Ironically, we now have an abundance of greens – arugula, spinach, and lettuces ready for which we are scrambling to find buyers.
Our strawberries are also ripening profusely. We will be offering strawberries for $48/ flat ( 8 quart boxes) at the Montclair market on June 1st. Individual quarts are $8 for members ($9 normally). We will also be offering “pick your own” strawberries for $6/quart or $40/flat on Sunday June 2nd on the farm anytime after 10 AM. I will give a short farm tour to anyone interested at 1 PM. Please RSVP for strawberry picking and place an order for flats of strawberries at the market on Saturday, so that we can reserve one for you. There is nothing that compares to fresh local strawberries and the season is very short. They are easy to freeze or make jam! We are also offering great deals on spinach at the markets this week or you can pick some up at the farm if you come out. Spinach is also easy to freeze. In the meantime, the CSA deliveries will begin in 2 weeks or less and we expect it to be a very nice first share.
Best, Farmer John
