Farm News – June 24, 2024
Hi Folks! I guess I don’t have to tell you what a brutal week of weather we had. The temperatures will be more moderate this week, but we still have not had any rain. As often happens on the farm, some passing storms moved to the north and the south. Hopefully there will be some precipitation this week.
The spinach has not been faring well in the heat, and it has not been not great for the broccoli or cauliflower either. We do have nice Swiss chard for you. We have had to cut a lot of the lettuce in the field before it bolts and is ruined – there will be two heads for the premium and basic shares, so enjoy that big salad! The peas continue to abound, however they do not like the heat much either. The broccoli is beginning to head up more prolifically now, so some groups may receive it this round, otherwise the brassica will be green cabbage. We also have some lovely fresh onions with tops attached – they are great for making stock for the more ambitious among you.
The share will be: Summer squash, cucumbers, peas, kale, Swiss chard, beets, lettuce, radishes, yellow onions, green cabbage or broccoli and choice of an herb – thyme, marjoram, savory, or parsley. Premium shares will also include endive and fennel.
The fruit share will be: 2 pints of blueberries (as a half fruit share to complete the previous strawberry half share).
Enjoy! Farmer John
