Circle Brook Farm
Circle Brook Farm

Hello Folks! It has been a little dry on the farm this past week. We have sandy soil, so it dries out quickly, and we are still sowing seeds and transplanting brassicas for the fall crop. We are in the part of the summer when rainfall typically depends on scattered thunderstorms, where scattered is the operative word. As I write this update, we are receiving a light rain and hoping for more overnight, otherwise we will be moving the sprinklers around tomorrow. Fortunately, the temperatures have been moderate and are forecast to remain so for the next ten days.

We have some nice sweet white onions with tops for you this week. Keep in mind that you can use much of the white center of the stalk to cook with. The beans have begun! In fact, my sneaky workers snuck some into the shares on Friday of last week, to not keep them in storage. This first planting is a small one, since I anticipated that we would still be picking peas at this time. Friday groups will not receive them this week and there may be a week pause until the next planting comes in. We finally have the root vegetable that everyone enjoys – carrots! We expect to have them in the shares on a regular basis for the rest of the season. Peppers, potatoes, and tomatoes are all coming soon!

The share for this week will be: lettuce, choice of kale or collards, Swiss chard, green cabbage, eggplant, choice of an herb (parsley, thyme, marjoram), white onions, summer squash, cucumbers, and green beans. Premium shares will also include fennel and basil.

The mushroom shares will be Lion’s mane this week. There will be a flower share- sunflowers or a mixed bouquet. There will not be a fruit share for this week.

Enjoy! Farmer John
