Circle Brook Farm

Hello Folks! I suppose that you don’t need me to tell you that it has been raining a lot. We were fortunate not to sustain any damage from the storms, and we are blessed with sandy loam soil which absorbs the rainfall nicely. I was able to get some planting done mid-week before the rain rolled in. Most of our crops were unscathed by the heat wave- having well saturated soil helps.

As predicted, the peas have prematurely petered out. The scorching heat just did not give our peas a chance! We still have loads of nice broccoli heading up and some cauliflower as well. There will be cauliflower for everyone over the next couple of weeks. The summer cauliflower is not quite as white as we will have in the fall. It needs to be blanched by tying the leaves over the head, and the long days make it difficult. It will have a stronger flavor, fine when roasted or steamed, but probably not the best for crudité.

This week’s share will be lettuce, kale or collards, summer squash, cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower (for some groups), eggplant, scallions, and choice of an herb. Premium shares will also include radicchio. There will be garlic scapes as an extra.

The fruit share will be Pink Lady apples and nectarines. The mushroom share will be Lion’s mane or King trumpets. There will be mixed bouquets for the flower share.

Enjoy! Farmer John
