Farm News – September 9, 2024

Hello Folks! We received ¾ inch of precipitation in about 2 hours from the storms that passed through last Saturday afternoon. A slower, gentler rain would have been better, but we take what we can get. We have been busy transplanting and direct seeding fall crops, and a substantial rain was helpful for sprouting seeds and rooting of the seedlings. The forecast looks a bit dry for the next week, so we may need to start moving the irrigation equipment around the fields. The cool weather has been slowing down the growth of the warm weather crops, peppers, eggplant, and squash. The temperatures will be on the rise over the next week, but the nights are remaining quite cool.

We are in between plantings of corn at the moment, so there will be a pause for a week, but there are four more varieties that we expect to have in quick succession after that. We still have lots of nice string beans for you and some lovely Swiss chard. The winter squash crop has been ripening up nicely, so we will enjoy some butternut squash this week – it is feeling like soup weather!

The share will be: Swiss chard, beans, carrots, shallots, red fingerling potatoes, butternut squash, shishito peppers, radishes, Napa cabbage, and choice of an herb.  Premium shares will also include dandelion greens.

The fruit share will be Hardy Kiwi berries and Gala apples.
