Circle Brook Farm

Hello All! So we made in through the first heat wave of Summer 2025. We sustained some damage to the crops, but it was minimal. By far the greatest hit was to our pea crop. I love peas, especially sugar snaps. I plant a lot of different cultivars of sugar snap pea, many are dwarf types that flower and produce their crop quickly, but the best are the tall ones that grow six or more feet tall and require trellis. We begin planting as early as possible, with hopes of getting a crop in late June and early July. This year the plants grew well until days of drizzle and overcast weather took their toll. The blazing heat was the second half of a one-two punch. The weather just never gave our peas a chance. It is a heart-breaking loss, especially after all the labor of driving posts and hanging trellis. I am very sorry to disappoint the members, I know how much you all enjoyed them too.

Another victim of the heat was our broccoli crop. We suddenly needed to harvest both a lot of broccoli and cauliflower and included both in the shares. We did our best to cut it and chill it down quickly, to preserve the quality, but I am afraid we were not highly successful. We are sending both again this week and I believe it is in better condition. Both crops are difficult to grow in the spring and will be much better in the fall.

We are moving into the summer crops now, the ones that like the heat – at least up to a point. We have some nice cucumbers for you this week.

The share will be: Swiss chard, choice of kale or collards, summer squash, scallions broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, choice of salad turnips or beets, cucumbers, and choice of an herb (cilantro, dill, savory, or parsley). Premium shares will also include spinach and fennel.

The fruit share will be cherries and black plums. The mushroom share will be piopinos/chestnuts.

Enjoy! Farmer John
