Circle Brook Farm

Hello Folks, so we made it though the dry spell and the second (or was it the third?) heat wave of the season. And that season was spring – we are not even officially into summer yet. The first half inch of rain that broke the dry spell came with high winds that knocked out our power for 36 hours. We had to back-feed the electrical panel in the greenhouse with a portable generator to keep the ventilation fans running. The last two storms dropped a half inch and ¾ of an inch, without such dire consequences. We can take a brief pause in moving the sprinklers around the field and stretching out reused drip tape on the acres of winter squash that I have been planting.

Everything is growing nicely. We have gorgeous lettuce for you, as well as escarole and frisée. The perennially popular peas are producing profusely. It will be English, aka shell peas again this week. These should be eaten as quickly as possible, as they do not hold their sweetness well. Sugar-snap and snow peas will be coming in strong by next week. We have Elephant garlic in the share this week. It is mild flavored, not actually true garlic, but more closely related to leeks. Many people like to roast the cloves to make a spread and the stalks can be used for soup stock. Some groups will receive salad turnips this round and others kohlrabi, both of which are delicious raw, but can also be cooked.

The share will be: lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, salad turnips or kohlrabi, summer squash, choice of escarole or endive, elephant garlic, and choice of an herb (cilantro, dill, thyme, and sweet marjoram). Mushrooms will be oysters. No fruit or flowers yet.

Enjoy! Farmer John
