Farm News – August 19, 2024
Hello All! Another week, another strong storm. We got two inches in about 2 hours. I’d love to complain about it, but after hearing about the flooding and ten inches that hit Connecticut, I don’t feel I have the right. Anyway, no new wind damage, and we will wait to see how the seeds planted in the days before the storm fare. And we will wait until the ground dries out a bit, and plant some more.
We are busy transplanting fall lettuce and brassica crops, and so at least they have been well watered. Unfortunately, all the wet weather has been bad for our tomato, pepper, and eggplant crops. All of these, but especially the tomatoes, are susceptible to fungal and other diseases and dampness creates the perfect conditions for their spread. We will keep the tomatoes coming for as long as we can, but it may be a short season. Beans are abundant at present, so there will be two varieties in each share this week. The melons are ripening in plenty; there are galias, honeydews, and cantaloupes!
The share will be: sweet corn, beets, Swiss chard, tomatoes, gold potatoes, scallions, lettuce, beans, melons, and choice of an herb. Premium shares will also include shallots and bok choi.
No fruit or flowers this week.
Enjoy! Farmer John
