Farm News – August 26, 2024

Hi Folks! We had a little taste of fall there for a few days, but now the temperatures are creeping back up toward the nineties. It will only be for a few days and, blessedly, it is still cooling off at night. More importantly, it has been dry, allowing the fields to dry out enough to proceed with the fall planting – spinach, arugula, baby bok choi, and broccoli raab – to name just a few.

We are at the midpoint of the season now, and in a few weeks, we will have more greens, butternut squash, and fall root crops. We have been transplanting loads of brassica crops and they too, will soon begin to make their encore appearance. In the meantime, we are hopeful that it will not get too cold anytime soon, so that we may continue to enjoy the warm weather crops. There are still more plantings of beans and sweet corn to mature and delicious, sweet peppers to ripen.

The share will be: beans, kale, rainbow carrots, garlic, melons, sweet corn, colored peppers, tomatoes, fingerling potatoes, zucchini, and choice of an herb. Premium shares will also include shishito peppers and a second variety of beans.

There will be a flower share this week – mixed varieties that dry well. We have had requests for just a single variety in the mushroom share and Joe, the grower, has been trying to accommodate. This week it be Enoki, which Joe stresses it is important to cook (just in case any of you have been eating them raw – something I never do). The fruit share will be Ginger Gold apples and nectarines.
