Farm News – October 21, 2024
Hi Folks! Beautiful weather we have been having, is it not? – unless you are a farmer! I am sure that you all are tired of hearing me complaining about the weather, but perhaps not as tired as I am of complaining. I hate to be a whiner, but I do need to keep you informed of what is happening on the farm. We had 5 consecutive nights of below freezing temperatures last week, not just a light frost, but a freeze. We covered as much as we could, but the tender crops cannot endure this degree of cold. And, of course , no rain and not much in sight.
We still have a few more ears of Silverqueen corn and some green peppers that survived, even though the plants did not. Not to worry though, we still have plenty of crops in storage and hardy greens and root veggies to give you nice shares as we head into the final weeks of the season.
The share will be: Peppers, spinach, kale, lettuce, rainbow carrots, acorn squash, radishes, cauliflower or kohlrabi, sweet corn, shallots, sweet potatoes, and choice of an herb (parsley, thyme, or oregano). The premium shares will also include endive (frisée) and cranberry shell beans.
The fruit share will be: Fuji apples and Hosui Asian pears.
Enjoy! Farmer John
