Farm News – September 12, 2022
Hello Folks, We received a little more that an inch of rain over several days last week. The heavy rain that was predicted never materialized here on the farm- it was mostly light rain and drizzle. In some ways this is good, because it gives the ground a chance to soak it up and not runoff. Unfortunately, two days of drizzle, followed by an overcast day make the perfect conditions for the fungal diseases which plague the tomatoes and cucurbits. We are currently on the second day of a similar scenario – light rain and little sunshine. We are, nevertheless, grateful for the precipitation.
Our third planting of summer squash is just beginning to bear fruit, as is a late planting of tomatoes. We will be starting a rotation over the next several weeks to deliver a few more tomatoes to everyone. We will also be sending either spaghetti squash or zucchini in rotation as well. We have more beans than we know what to do with or can keep up with picking! There will be a slightly larger amount in the shares this week. We also still have a lot of sweet corn maturing, although despite our best efforts the percentage of earworms is increasing. Husk the ears outside and cut the tips off if it grosses you out too much. It is really delicious and it’s worth the trouble!
The share for this week will be: Beans, beets, peppers, red onions, russet (baking) potatoes, sweet corn, arugula, lettuce, kale, basil, either zucchini or spaghetti squash and possibly a few tomatoes. Premium shares will also include daikon.
The fruit share for this week will be: Gala apples and Hardy Kiwi berries.
