Farm News – September 19, 2013

Hi Folks,
Well I can report that we received an inch of much needed precipitation last Thursday, but at quite a cost. The rain came in a torrential downpour mostly during a 15 minute period accompanied by fierce winds that toppled trees all over our area. We lost power for about 30 hours until midnight on Friday. I was returning from PA where I was picking up fertilizer and as I neared the farm I began to encounter branches in the roadway and the trees blocking one lane of the road. When I was 5 minutes from the farm I was stopped by a tree blocking the entire road. I finally arrived home about an hour later after repeated detours were also found to be impassable. (more…)

Farm News – September 25, 2017

Hi Everyone!  As we head into the fall we will be transitioning back into cool weather crops, but for now we are still abundant with summer veggies.  Next week we will begin to have broccoli again and we will start to ship some of the winter squash in the shares.  We have a nice crop of fall carrots coming along, but we will give them one more week to size up.   We have salad turnips for everyone this week.  They are great either raw or cooked and have beautiful greens. Farm News- July 28, 2011

Hi Folks,

Holy heat and humidity, Batman! The record breaking heat wave has been stressing my crops and taking a toll on my workers and myself. We have been moving the sprinklers around trying to maintain some soil moisture on those crops not set up with drip irrigation. The extreme temps have also led to the second onion catastrophe in as many weeks. (more…)

Farm News – June 27, 2016

Hello Everyone!  So we are still waiting for some rain.  There is some in the forecast for tonight and Tuesday but they have been wrong so many times now…  I mentioned a rain dance in last week’s episode.  My form of rain dance is to head out into the fields on my seeding tractor to do some planting.  This has worked often in the past to get the skies to open up but I tried it last week and only managed to squeeze out a few drops! Farm News – August 19, 2019

Hi Folks! So, it continues to rain regularly here on the farm. We received almost 2½ inches over the past week, a bit more than the inch per week that is ideal. I’m not complaining though — it’s been good for the thousands of transplants we’ve been setting out, as well as helpful for germinating the direct seeded crops. It’s come mostly in the evening and overnight which means it hasn’t interfered with our work. In case you hadn’t noticed we’re in the throes of another heat wave, which might be worth complaining about if it would do any good. Besides, I’m still working on my string of consecutive weeks without complaining about the weather! Although the Guinness folks haven’t returned my call yet. (more…)
