Farm News – November 10, 2025

Hi Folks! We have had a little bit of rain and a whole lot of wind. Tonight, the temperatures will drop into the mid-twenties- brrrr! It has been a mild fall thus far, but winter is coming! We gave up covering the peppers and picked what fruit remained on the plants. Now we are covering the hardier crops, which may still sustain some damage from a hard freeze.
We are distributing what little garlic that we have remaining- they are small, but we need the larger ones for planting. The winter squash for this round will be a mixture of Sweet Dumpling, Carnival, and Jester. The sweet potatoes will be a combination of Bonita – a white variety, and Stokes – with a purple interior. The purple sweets are wonderful, but they are drier and take longer to cook if you are baking them. The potatoes are a variety called Adirondack Red which have pink flesh.
The share will be: Kale, choice of arugula, broccoli raab, or other mustard, baby bok choi, salad turnips, red cabbage, beets, winter squash assortment, Adirondack Red potatoes, and sweet potato combo. Cauliflower for any group that did not receive any last week. Premium shares will also include Swiss chard and sunchokes.
Enjoy! Farmer John
A word about the fruit shares: It was a difficult year for fruit. The New York farm that I normally rely heavily on for their eco-grown tree fruit had a bad crop of stone fruit – peaches, plums, cherries, and nectarines. I ordered from them several times but never received any of these fruits. Due to this I had to source these fruits from West Coast organic growers. There was at least one occasion when peaches did not ripen properly and turned brown inside. If you experienced this, I apologize. It is difficult to stake my reputation on products I have no control over. But as Seinfeld told Kramer in one episode,” I don’t return fruit. Fruit is a risk; I know that going in.” I will need to re-examine the fruit share going forward. I think a shorter season, i.e., fewer weeks, will allow more flexibility and cause me less stress.
We are sending a “bonus” fruit share this week – a bag of Stayman apples (my personal favorite for both eating and baking). Please enjoy and accept my apologies if some of the fruit in your shares was subpar this season.
