Farm News – September 23, 2024
Hi All! The weather has certainly been beautiful lately – plenty of sunshine and mild temperatures. The only issue for us here on the farm is that there has been no rain now for nearly two weeks. Several predicted rain events never materialized and the best chance for precipitation this week are several days offering a fifty percent chance. We are busy moving the sprinklers around the fields to germinate seeds and keep the crops growing, but some help from Mother Nature would be greatly appreciated.
It is officially fall now and we are obliging the new season as we move into the fall vegetables. Broccoli and cauliflower are heading up, and we will have both in the shares over the next two weeks. Zucchini has become more plentiful, so we will include it in all the shares this week and finish with the delicata squash in a few weeks when the summer squash is starting to wane. We are continuing our rotation with eggplant and green peppers and hoping to have more colored peppers as we head into October. We have been bringing in the winter squash crop and curing it for storage. We have a delicious, heirloom white acorn squash, which for some reason has developed freckles. I am not sure how well it is going to store, so we are sending it this week. Please try to enjoy it in the next week or two.
The share will be: Swiss chard, beans, radishes, garlic, beets with tops, zucchini, broccoli, or cauliflower, bok choy, peppers or eggplant, white acorn squash and choice of an herb. There will be hot peppers as an extra this week. Premium shares will also include shallots and shishito peppers (just because I could not make it through an update without a little alliteration lol).
The fruit will be Starkrimson pears and hardy Kiwi berries.
Enjoy! Farmer John
