Howdy Folks,

Summer has officially ended and with it go the warm weather crops. The tomatoes are definitely over for the season; the peppers should continue producing for a few more weeks. The eggplants are full of small fruit but they are sizing up very slowly. (more…)

Farm News – October 23, 2017

Hi Folks!  A week after our frost event we are seeing the damage that was caused.  It seems bit strange, but while the peppers and beans were not completely killed, we had damage to some crops that are usually quite hardy.  Lettuce, which is much tougher than one might think, had quite a bit of tip burn, as did the chard.  Even the broccoli and the kale have some white spots on the leaves — a sign of frost damage.  (more…)

Westfield CSA accepting applications for 2016 season!

It’s time to sign up for the 2016 season!

Why Join a CSA?  First and foremost, you build a relationship with a real person who works hard to bring you fresh produce every week;  You save gas by not flying in your produce from California (or other countries), you keep a small farmer in business, you help keep land undeveloped, and you keep toxic chemicals off the land by supporting organic farming.  You also got to see the face of your food and eat a variety of fresh, local, organic produce!

Know your farmer.  Know your food.

Did you know that John spends over $30,000 on seeds each year?  When we pay ahead of the season, John can pay for his seeds without having to pay interest on his credit card bills.

The price structure for the 2016 season remains the same as in previous years, but with a late fee for last minute signups:

  • $625 if paid in full by March 1
  • $650 if paid in full by April 30
  • $675 on or after May 1 (subject to availability)

You can put down a non-refundable deposit of $200 to save your share.  If you have extenuating circumstances and need to work out a payment plan we can work with you.

Email westfieldcsa@gmail.com for more information or click here to download an application form.

As before, you can split a share with someone else. If you need help finding someone to split with, let us know and we will pair you up as I get requests!

Returning members will be guaranteed a spot in the CSA if registered by Feb 6. After that registration is first come, first served.

Share this information with anyone who may be interested in joining the Westfield Area CSA!

Circle Brook Fruit Share 2016

We will once again offer a fruit share for the 2016 season. It will be a slightly shorter season (12 weeks) and comes with some caveats.  All of the local fruit producers have had a very bad season due to late frosts and freezes in the spring.  Many have lost their entire crop of plums and apricots and have had significant losses with peaches and nectarines.  Normally most of the fruit we distribute comes from an organic farm in the Hudson Valley, NY.  While the farm grows their vegetable crops organically, the fruit is labeled Eco-grown.  This means that they adhere as much as possible to organic methods but do spray when necessary with products not approved for organic production.  These sprays are primarily early in the season when the fruit is just setting.  The farm regularly tests the fruit to insure it is free of pesticide residues. Sign up for Fruit Shares!

We will once again offer a fruit share for the 2015 season!

The share will consist of 2 types of tree fruit each week with an average of 5-7 lbs. total weight.  We will begin the season with blueberries, peaches, plums, and nectarines. During those weeks when we send blueberries and kiwi the total weight will be less as these are high priced items.

The fall fruit shares will be comprised of different varieties of apples and pears each week and hopefully some organic hardy kiwi from PA at the end of September.  The season will run for 14 weeks beginning the week of July 19 and ending in October. We may skip one week at the end of August.

The cost of the fruit share will be $15 per week which equals $210 for the season.

Sign up this week for Fruit Shares!

We will once again offer a fruit share for the 2014 season! We will soon begin planting a variety of fruit trees, bushes and brambles. In coming years I expect to produce most, if not all the crops for a fruit share. But for now, most of the fruit we distribute will come from an organic farm in the Hudson Valley, NY. (more…)

Farm News – September 24, 2018

Hi Everyone, So I regret to report that things have gone from bad to sad here on the farm. Pedro Perez Hernandez of Guatemala fathered and, along with his wife Juana raised 13 beautiful children, seven of whom work on my crew. Don Pedro passed away this past Saturday. Early Sunday morning I brought 3 of his children to the airport so that they could return to be with their family and help their mother through this difficult time. The practice what is called a novena, a nine-day period of prayer and mourning, so they will return in a little over a week. (more…)
